What is a hub bearing?
The hub bearing is a part that connects the tire (rotating member) / brake disc (rotating member) and the steering knuckle (Knuckle). Its main function is to reduce friction for the rotating pair and also to transmit torque. It is subjected to very large radial loads (vehicle weight) and axial loads (lateral or lateral impact forces of the tire when steering).
First generation wheel bearing
The first generation of wheel bearings were double row angular contact ball bearings and double row tapered roller bearings.
In order to ensure that the preloading load is within the specified range after installation, the initial bearing clearance is preset, and it is not necessary to use the spacer to adjust the preload load on the automobile assembly line. In addition, the hub bearing comes with a sealing ring, eliminating the need for manual external mounting of the sealing ring.
Generally applicable to: Santana 2000, Chery, Jetta, Passat B5, Mazda, Renault, Peugeot, Volkswagen Golf, minivan and some heavy trucks.
Since the first generation of bearings are independent of the knuckle and the hub, in the online assembly, the inner ring of the bearing needs to be press-fitted onto the hub and the outer ring of the bearing is pressed into the knuckle.
Due to the complex assembly process, equipment and process control requirements are high. Second is the poor performance. Due to the inability to accurately control the process during installation, the performance deviation of the bearing after pressing is also large, and the overall performance is low.
Due to the above shortcomings of the first generation of bearings, its output has been declining year by year. Except for some car manufacturers considering the front wheel bearing bearing still using a generation of bearings, it will eventually disappear. (Although I doubt this because in China In the magical land, for the cost, the car factory did everything, and it was a helpless hand.)
Second generation wheel bearing
On the basis of the first generation, the tapping holes and flanges of the second generation of hub bearing fixing nuts are mounted on the suspension bracket.
The second generation of hub bearings is characterized by fewer components, lighter weight and easier installation. The second generation of hub bearing outer ring with flange is connected directly to the suspension via the shackle (inner ring rotation type) or to the brake disc and steel ring (outer ring rotation type).
The second generation of wheel bearings are generally suitable for: Volkswagen LT, Kia, Renault, Saab, Jetta, Lavida, polo, etc.
The structure of the second-generation bearing is a bit more complicated, and the hub is integrated on the basis of a generation of bearings.
Compared with the first-generation bearing, this step of pressing into the hub is omitted during assembly, but it also needs to be assembled with the knuckle with an interference fit. The assembly accuracy is only slightly higher than that of the first-generation bearing. However, it also has the disadvantage of poor performance.
At present, in addition to some car manufacturers still insist on using on the rear wheel hub (I will not say that this car factory is Volkswagen), and it is used less and less like a generation of bearings, and eventually disappeared.
Third generation wheel bearing
The third-generation hub bearing unit with ABS sensor, the hub unit comprises an inner flange and an outer flange, the inner flange is bolted to the rim (steel ring), the outer flange and the outer ring of the bearing are integrated into one, and the steering is mounted On the festival.
The third generation of wheel bearings are generally suitable for Cadillac, Mazda, and many other high-class cars.
In terms of integration, the inner ring of the third-generation bearing integrates a hub, and the outer ring is integrated with a flange connecting the steering knuckle, and the steering knuckle can be connected by bolts. Assembly accuracy is greatly improved. And because all dimensions are precisely controlled at the supplier, performance is the best.
