A Voltage Sensitive Relay (VSR) allows both batteries to be charged simultaneously. When the engine starts and the main battery pack (start and house) is charged at the same time. When the combined voltage falls below 12.8 volts (eg. engine stopped), the VSR disengages, disengaging the battery. The system eliminates the possibility of draining the wrong battery and protects sensitive electronics powered by household batteries from harmful engine cranking spikes.
Once the voltage of the main battery rises above 13.2VDC, the VSR switches to charge the two batteries in parallel, and when the combined voltage falls below 12.8VDC, the VSR disengages. Disengagement can occur when idling (due to slow alternator speed and low current) or if the household battery is running low. An increase in engine speed will increase the output of the alternator and maintain the voltage.
