Thread forming taps are also known as fluted taps, forming taps, rolled taps or cold forming taps.

With carbide forming taps, the thread is obtained by plastic deformation rather than material removal. Because of work hardening, you get higher thread tensile strength, no chip removal or chip removal, and you can use the same tap for both blind and through holes.

Carbide taps are the only solution for tapping heat-treated steel up to HRC 62. HSS taps cannot machine materials harder than HRC 46.
