Both AC motor system and PMSM motor system have their advantages and disadvantages. Through continuous experimentation and practice, we found that PMSM motor is more energy-saving comparing with AC motor, but the latter is also irreplaceable in some places or occasion (see FAQ Q1 for more information about the differences between AC motor and PMSM motor). Advantages of PMSM Motor:

1. PMSM motor & controller are cheaper comparing to AC motor.

2. No matter in terms of dimension or weight, PMSM motor outdoes AC motor. It is smaller in size and weight less, which will save more room for battery and transportation fee.

3. From the view of performance, according to one of our clients:" PMSM motor system gave me a better feeling of driving. It is more smooth and comfortable, without vibration whatever accelerate or stop." (He is from Thailand and used AC motor before). We have test data to support that.

4. More inportantly, the efficiency of PMSM motor is higher , up to 98%. It means it has more cruising range (20% farther). Suppose a car with AC motor drive 100km, it can drive 120km with PMSM motor (at the same motor power & battery capacity).

FAQ

Q1: What is the difference between AC motor and PMSM motor?

AC motor is simple in structure, easy to manufacture and of high reliability. At the same time, it can withstand large changes in operating temperature. The biggest problem is that the starting torque is small, thus, it is necessary for AC motor to increase the starting current to generate high torque, which has higher requirements on the output power of battery. Also, it has lower efficiency; the performance of regenerative brake and speed regulation is not so good comparing with PMSM motor. While PMSM motor, with high efficiency, small size and light weight saves more than 20% energy compared with AC motor. Both space and energy matter. These two types of motor have their advantages and disadvantages. They are suitable for different environments. Please talk to our persons and we will suggest the right one.
