An English wheel, also known as a turbine in the UK, is a metalworking tool that enables craftsmen to form composite (double curvature) curves from flat metals such as aluminium or steel.
The process of using English wheels is called wheeling. Its main advantage is the flexibility to produce different panels using the same machine. It is a forming machine that works by surface stretching, and is related to the panel beating process in function.
It is used where a small amount of composite curved panels is required; typically used in passenger car manufacturing, automotive restoration, space frame chassis racing, which comply with regulations requiring sheet metal panels similar to mass production vehicles, automotive prototypes and aircraft skin components. In low-volume sports car production, UK wheel production is highest, especially when easier-to-form aluminium alloys are used.
