Polyester is a very light synthetic material and when made into a sling it is a very cost effective sling. The material is soft to the touch (hence the soft sling) so it is less likely to cause damage to the load when it is lifted, compared to wire rope slings, it does not cause the type of injury to the user, such as cuts from broken wires, artificial Handling or impact injury. Synthetic polyester (fibrous material) slings are much lighter than wire rope or chain slings, so this lifting sling is easier to handle.

Polyester slings are much less expensive than alternative slings made from other materials, and are generally lighter, more flexible and have a higher safety factor, although they do have lower abrasion resistance. This can be overcome by using a wear resistant sleeve made of polyester or polyurethane. Polyurethane can be wrapped around the sling or glued to the surface of the sling.
