Rotomolding is a high-temperature, low-pressure plastic molding process that uses heat and two-axis rotation to produce hollow, one-piece parts. During the heating phase, the mold rotates slowly in two planes (biaxial rotation). The process consists of four distinct stages: A quantity of polymer, usually in powder form, is loaded into a mold. Heat the mold in the oven while rotating until all the polymer has melted and adhered to the mold walls. The hollow part should be rotated by two or more axes at different speeds to avoid accumulation of polymer powder. Air cool the mold. The polymer must be cooled so that it solidifies and can be handled safely by the operator. The part shrinks as it cools, releasing it from the mold and allowing for easy part removal. Remove parts.

Working principle of rotational molding

The unique design of the rotomolding machine coats the plastic evenly inside each mold. The picture on the right is our stand-alone rotomolding machine. This is one of the most common machines in the industry. It has three arms. The machine is an independent model. Standalone machines can be equipped with up to three arms that can move separately from other machines. This allows for molds of different sizes, with different heating and thickness needs. It consists of oven, cooling chamber and mold spindle. The spindle is mounted on a rotating axis to provide an even coating of the plastic within each mold.

The rotational molding process has several advantages. Large hollow parts such as our polyethylene noses are easier to manufacture by rotational molding than by any other method. Rotary molds are much less expensive than other types of molds. These products can be custom designed to meet precise market needs more economically than traditional injection or blow molding. Very little material is wasted using this process, and the excess can often be reused, making it a very economical and environmentally friendly manufacturing process. Wasted material can be recycled through scrapped or failed component testing. The process also offers fundamental design advantages such as consistent wall thickness and strong exterior corners that are essentially stress-free.
