The introduction of biomass gasifying technology
1) What is biomass?
Biomassrefers to any organic materials that are derived from plants or animals.
Asthe renewable and sustainable energy source, biomass is constantly being formed by the interaction of CO2, air , water, soil, and sunlight with plants and animals. After an organism dies, microorgnisms break down biomass into elementary constituent parts like H2O, CO2, and its potential energy. Because the CO2, a biomass releases through the action of microorgnisms or combustion was absorbed by it in the recent past , biomass combustion does not increase the total CO2 inventory of earth. So it is called the green energy.
Biomassincludes only living and recently dead biological species that can be used as fuel or in chemical production, It does not include organic materials what over millions of years have been transformed by geological process into substances such as coal, petroleum etc.
Commons sources of biomass are:
1) Agricultural: food grain, bagasse(crushed sugarcrane), corn stalks, straw, seed hulls, nutshells, manure from cattle / poultry / hogs.
2) Forest : trees, wood waste, wood or bark, sawdust, timber slash, and mill scrap.
3) Municipal : sewage sludge, refuse-derived fuel(RDF), food waste, waste paper, yard clippings
4) Energy : poplars, williows, switchgrass, alfalfa, prairie bluestem, corn, soybean, canola and other plant oils.
5) Biological : animal waste, aquatic species, biological waste.
2) What is biomass gasifying?
Gasification is the conversion of solid or liquid feedstock into useful and covenient gaseous fuel or chemical feedstock that can be burned to release energy or used for production of value-added chemicals.
The gasification process add hydrogen to and strips carbon away from feedstock to produce gases
with higher hydrogen-to-carbon(H/C) ratio.
A typical biomass gasifying process basically include the following steps in the gasifier:
Drying zone
fuel sent into the furnace, heated to 200 to 300 ° C, water in the raw material is first evaporated, the product is a dry raw material and steam.
Pyrolysis zone(Carbonization layer)
fuel being continued to be heated in the furnace , volatiles will be precipitated from peat in a large amount, substantially complete when it is at 500 ~ 600 ℃, leaving a residue of a fixed carbon and ash. The pyrolysis reaction precipitated the volatile consists mainly of water vapor, H2, CO2, CO, CH4, tar and other hydracarbon.
Gasification zone
Remaining fixed carbon pyrolysis react violently with air introduced, at the same time, releasing a lot of heat, supporting the entire gasifier reaction. The oxidation reaction rate is high, and participate in the combustion of volatile matter further degradation. The main chemical reaction as follows:
Combustion zone
The reaction in this zone is an endothermic reaction, the required heat is provided by the gasification layer, the reaction rate is relatively slow. The main chemical reaction as follows:
In the above reaction, only the oxidation reaction is exothermic reaction. The releasing heat can provide heat for the straw drying, pyrolysis, and a reduction reaction. There is no clear boundary of the above four regions in the the actual fluidized-bed gasification furnace. It should be mutual penetration and interleaved throughout the gasifier temperature is more or less the same.
After gasification, the ash released with the gas and cleared by the dry-ash removal / wet ash handling outside the furnace. Peat gasification means in a certain thermodynamic conditions, peat can only occurs incomplete combustion with limited oxygen, generating CO, H2, and low molecular weight hydrocarbons and other combustible gases.
3) What is biomass gas?
The gas produced by the gasifier is called biomass gas, it is also called synthetic or syngas, which is a mixture of H2 & CO, with heat value from 1000-2000 Kcal according to different material.
The main combustable gas composition is H2, CO, and CH4, but there are also other composition like tar, moisture, sulfide etc, which is harm to metal parts of gas engine.
Tar produced in the gasification process, is easily mixed with straw and water, ash and other impurities together, clogging gas pipeline, corrosion of metal. It would be a big destroy of the gas utilization device, such as an internal combustion engine, gas turbine and so on. Therefore the need of gas purification processing is really high.
