The official firmware created for PortaPack has several decoders and transmitters built in, but the third-party "Havoc" firmware is really what you'll want to use as it includes more decoders and transfer options.

Capture and playback:
- One of the great things about the PortaPack is that it can capture and replay wireless signals from ISM band remotes very easily.
- Create a catch. You just need to go to the 'Catching' menu, set the frequency of the remote, press the red 'R' Record button, then press the key on the remote.
- Then stop recording to save it to SD card.
- Now you can go to the replay menu, select the file you just recorded and hit play. The exact same signal will be transmitted over the air, effectively replacing your key fob.

Microphone Transmitter:
- Using the 3.5mm audio jack, the Portapack can also be used as a standard push-to-talk or voice-activated walkie-talkie radio. Plug the microphone into the audio
Jack just needs to hold down the right button to make a call.
- If desired, you can also enable multiple CTCSS tones options, as well as tones that appear to be transferred to wireless headphones

Other launchers:
- There are generic OOK transmitters that can be programmed with custom data. This mode might be useful for experimenting with simple key fobs or things like home, automation switches.
- Many transfer modes implemented are buggy in most countries and can cause you huge trouble. These launchers are purely for internal testing of Faraday cages!

receiver:
By connecting speakers to the Portapack's 3.5mm audio jack, you can easily listen to standard NFM and WFM audio signals. ADS-B reception can be easily enabled on the PortaPack by selecting the inductor and lightning symbol in the upper right corner. With the offset tee enabled, you can receive the plane.

When you put the PortaPack in "HackRF Mode", your HackRF will continue to use the computer-based SDR software.

PortaPack is only compatible with HackRF One. It is not compatible with earlier HackRF Jawbreaker designs. If an RF shield is installed on your HackRF,
PortaPack should be a good fit. Compatibility with HackRF Blue is experimental. One Blue owner reported good results with little mechanical disturbance
Between the PortaPack audio capacitors and the baseband header. If your HackRF Blue does not have a baseband header installed, there should be no mechanical issues.

The PortaPack requires an external battery. Any battery connected to USB should work, although they vary widely in quality, and a poorly designed battery can inject regulator noise into the radio.

The PortaPack and HackRF One will not replace your handheld ham radio receiver. Reception sensitivity varies by frequency band, but performance is not as good as a true amateur radio receiver.
